#1 How Much Does Kitchen Remodeling Cost?

This can be a loaded question, as numerous factors go into determining overall cost. For a small kitchen remodel, you can expect to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000. Major kitchen overhauls can cost $100,000 or more.
Below, we highlight the aspects of remodeling a kitchen that contribute to the cost.
1. Budget
This is a fairly obvious one. The more you spend, the more elaborate the design or scope of work will be. This will require more materials, labor, and customizations.
2. Kitchen size
Smaller kitchens require fewer materials and time to complete; while larger ones take up more resources.
3. Layout and design preferences
This can include structural changes, custom design work, and reconfiguring cabinetry or appliances. The complexity of the new layout can also add to the cost.
4. Material choices (cabinets, countertops, flooring)
While we always advise on using quality materials, homeowners have an array of options. Higher-end finishes, such as quartz or hardwood flooring, cost more than mid-range materials like butcher block countertops and vinyl plank floors.
5. Appliance selection
Appliances also come in many premium and mid-range options. Brands like Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Viking, and Thermador tend to cost more than household names like KitchenAid, Bosch, LG Studio, GE, and Samsung.
6. Electrical and plumbing updates
Moving and installing wall switches, electrical outlets, and light fixtures are a few of the most common costs that must be assessed. When it comes to plumbing, moving or upgrading pipes can add to the bottom line.
7. Labor costs
Construction crews, subcontractors, and installers are a few of the most common workers who contribute to the cost of labor.
8. Unexpected repairs or structural issues
This usually isn’t a problem on newer homes; however, occasionally, older homes may contain hidden surprises that require more time and labor to rectify. Common examples include outdated wiring, water damage, subflooring issues, mold or mildew, and old pipes.
#2 How Long Does it Take to Remodel a Kitchen?

For small kitchens, installing new countertops, replacing cabinets, and updating the decor can take about six to eight weeks.
Installing new flooring and cabinets could extend the completion time to roughly 12 to 16 weeks.
A complete overhaul, such as custom cabinetry, high-end electronics, structural changes, and custom workmanship, can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months.
#3 Which Permits Do Kitchen Remodels Require & Who Handles This?

Permits are important to ensure compliance and prevent inspection issues. The project’s general contractor typically handles permit applications.
Permit required:
- Structural changes
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Mechanical modifications
No permit required:
- Painting
- Tiling
- Carpeting
- Installing cabinets/countertops
#4 What Type of Cabinets Should I Put in My Kitchen?

With so many options, it can be hard to choose just one. We recommend going with what works with your existing decor and what potential home buyers are looking for.
Here are a few most common types of cabinets for kitchen remodels:
Shaker cabinets – Clean, modern look thanks to their recessed-panel design. You can install these in both modern and traditional kitchens to achieve a new look.
Flat-panel cabinets – A minimalist style that creates a sleek look thanks to their smooth surfaces. Folks trying to achieve a contemporary or modern look should consider this type of cabinet.
Inset cabinets – One reason homeowners like this style of cabinetry is its precise craftsmanship. Inset cabinet doors sit flush with the frame, giving the kitchen a high-end look.
Glass-front cabinets – This is a great look for a number of different home types, including cabins. You can seamlessly use these in homes with traditional, modern, transitional, and farmhouse themes.
Beadboard cabinets – Fun look for cabins and cottage-style aesthetics as they add texture and charm, making the kitchen more inviting.
#5 What are the Best Kitchen Countertops?

This is another question that is best answered based on existing decor or the overall theme you are trying to accomplish with your finished kitchen.
Here are the most common countertop materials we use:
Quartz – This durable non-porous countertop is a great option. It comes in countless colors and designs; however, due to it being man-made and labor-intensive, it can be one of the more expensive options on this list.
Granite – Time-tested granite brings a natural feel to the kitchen. Every granite countertop is unique and has plenty of colors for homeowners to choose from.
Butcher block – Great for adding warmth and an organic touch to your kitchen. Cabin homes, farmhouse kitchens, and Scandinavian designs complement this type of countertop.
Marble – Not the perfect choice for every kitchen, but the elegance that comes with marble makes it ideal for high-end homes and luxury kitchen remodels.
Concrete – This is a highly customizable option that’s both cost-effective and durable. It offers an industrial-chic look that works well in modern, contemporary, rustic, and minimalist homes.
#6 Which Flooring Type Works Best in Kitchens?

Our design team helps clients with materials, fixtures, and finishes, including which flooring type works best in their new kitchen.
Here are a few flooring options we like:
Luxury vinyl plank – Mimics hardwood but is more durable, water-resistant, and costs considerably less while offering the same aesthetic appeal.
Tile – You can choose from a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes to make a truly unique floor. Popular types of tiles include ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone.
Engineered hardwood – More resilient than solid hardwood, great for dealing with kitchen spills, and less prone to warping or shrinking. It also looks and feels great in the kitchen.
#7 Can I Use My Kitchen While Being Remodeled?

This depends on the extent of the kitchen renovations and the stage at which it is at. You may find it inconvenient to try to prepare meals in your kitchen while workers are present, but you might be able to use appliances in the evening.
We recommend setting up a temporary kitchen – microwave, minifridge, portable cooktop, etc., if you have the ability. Otherwise, you may want to consider eating out and low-prep meals.
