7 FAQs About Bathroom Remodels

Staring at your dated bathroom and thinking it’s time for a change? If so, you likely have a lot of questions, such as how much it will cost and how long it will take. Below, we’ve answered these questions and many more.

If you don’t see your questions listed or would like to get an estimate on your Flagstaff bathroom remodel, please reach out to the Outlook Construction & Remodeling team directly! We can’t wait to hear what you have in mind for your dream bathroom upgrade.

#1 How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost?

In Arizona, the cost to remodel a bathroom ranges from $8,500 to $15,000 for a modest, smaller bathroom. While more extensive, upscale renovations can soar past the $20,000 range.

The only way to know for sure how much your bathroom remodel costs is to get a quote. To help you understand the costs associated with remodeling a bathroom, we’ve highlighted the main factors:

Labor Costs

Skilled professionals, including plumbers, electricians, drywallers and tapers, tilers, and flooring installers, are essential for quality craftsmanship and constitute a significant portion of the project’s budget. The size of the space adds to the materials needed and the amount of time these workers need to complete their part of the renovation.

Materials & Fixtures

There are IKEA items you can buy at a good deal, or you can spend thousands on high-end fixtures made with expensive materials. For example, marble countertops and custom, handmade cabinetry will push the remodel cost up.

Typically, homeowners choose materials and finishes that match the rest of their home, which are durable, inviting, and somewhere in the middle cost-wise.

Structural Modifications

Depending on the extent of your remodeling project, walls may need to be removed or added, ceiling heights may need adjusting, or other structural issues may need to be addressed. These can add to the cost, especially if any work is required by code.

Custom Design Elements

There are all sorts of cool features you can add to your Flagstaff home’s bathroom. Think heated floors and towel racks, anti-fog mirrors, or a steam-generating shower! Obviously, luxury additions like these add to the total bill.

Plumbing & Electrical Upgrades

If you don’t plan on moving a toilet or bath or installing a new shower, your plumbing costs will remain relatively low. However, if your new vanity needs plumbing work to accommodate or if you plan on converting a tub to a shower, there is additional plumbing work that’s required.

Electrical upgrades don’t typically cost as much as plumbing work does, but if light fixtures are added or moved, this can add time and money to the project.

Both plumbing and electrical upgrades may be required if the home is older and needs to be brought up to code.

#2 How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take?

Just like with the total cost, the amount of time it takes from start to finish for a bathroom remodel depends on the size, complexity, and design elements of the project.

With so many factors influencing the time bathroom renovations take, such as what is being done–whether it’s new cabinets, countertops, flooring, plumbing, electrical, paint, or adding/removing a tub or shower, it’s hard to guess. Additionally, the time it takes for clients to approve the final scope, layout, and materials, not to mention material delivery schedules, can all affect the overall time.

Here’s a general idea of a typical bath-remodel timeline:

  • Small bathroom remodels (5’x8′) may take 4-6 weeks;
  • Cosmetic remodels (paint, new fixtures, etc.) may take 3-4 weeks; and
  • Major remodels may take 12 or more weeks.

#4 What’s the Best Countertop to Use?

This is a great question and one we devoted an entire blog post to: What’s Trending in Bathroom Countertops?

We highly recommend you give it a read. But to save you some time, we recommend going with one of these options:

  • Granite–durable, natural, variety of colors
  • Quartz–resistant to stains and scratches, man-made in just about every color imaginable
  • Quartzite–available in a wide range of colors and patterns
  • Marble–strong, durable, looks great in both dark and light colors

#5 What Type of Cabinets Should I Go With?

Here’s another article we recently published on the best bathroom cabinets you should read: Best Material for Bathroom Cabinets: Exploring 7 Popular Wood Species

More often than not, wood cabinets are the way to go. In many ways, they’re timeless, and with so many options to choose from, your bathroom design can match any style.

Here are our recommendations:

  • Oak–durable, prominent-grain, and versatile
  • Hickory–dense, rustic, and strong
  • Alder–Lightweight, knotty, and soft
  • Maple–Smooth and fine-grain with a creamy look
  • Cherry–Fine-grained with a reddish-brown color
  • Walnut–Straight-grained with a rich, dark appearance

#6 How Do I Choose the Right Fixtures & Finishes?

Do you have a certain style or look you want to achieve? Start there! Whether you desire a modern, traditional, ranch, or cabin style for your bathroom, what’s important is that you love it.

We recommend matching the rest of your home’s look for a seamless flow from room to room.

You also want to ensure that the fixtures and finishes you choose are of good quality and durable. After all, bathrooms tend to get a lot of use, so we want to buy from manufacturers known for their longevity, functionality, and visually appealing products.

Consider using matching finishes, such as wood and metals. Popular metal finishes include chrome, brushed nickel, polished brass, oil-rubbed bronze, and matte black. At the very least, choose one for use throughout your bathroom–faucets, cabinet hardware, and towel racks.

If you can’t match, find complementing finishes instead. This may be necessary for the bathroom’s flooring. Color coordination, material harmony, texture and pattern balance, and seamless transitions are what we aim to achieve.

Again, our recommendation is to match the overall look of the rest of the home.

#7 Can You Make My Bathroom More Accessible?

Bathroom accessibility is a major concern for many of our clients. Aging, injury, or disability are common reasons to make a bathroom safer and easier to use.

Here are some ways we can make bathrooms more accessible:

  • Grab bars–typically near the toilet and inside the shower or bathtub.
  • Doorways–widening to allow for wheelchair access (typically 32 inches wide).
  • Curbless showers–make it easier to get in and out of the shower and allow wheelchair users to roll directly in.
  • Sitdown bathtubs–you step in, sit down, close the door, and fill the tub (shown in the picture above).
  • Fixture heights–to make sinks and toilets more accessible, we often lower vanities and install comfort-height toilets.
  • Non-slip flooring–polished stones and glazed ceramic tiles can be particularly slippery when wet. To prevent falls, we often go with a textured, rough finish tile, vinyl, or rubber.
  • Lighting–enhances visibility, making for a safer environment and reducing fall risks.
